A private Komodo cruise charter is a whole-vessel sailing tour of Komodo National Park in Flores, Indonesia, departing from Labuan Bajo. You book the entire cruise-class ship — typically 14 to 25 guests across multiple decks — with air-conditioned indoor dining, ranger-guided dragon trekking, snorkelling and island stops, from USD 5,300 per night.

komododragontour.com is operated by Komodo Luxury, a Labuan Bajo sailing operator since 2015 and part of Juara Holding Group. We own, crew and maintain our fleet in-house rather than reselling other people’s boats, which is why we can tell you exactly which deck a cabin sits on and how a specific hull behaves in a swell. Founder and CEO Agung Afif is a Forbes Business Council member; the company holds TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards for 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, plus TripAdvisor’s Best Boat Agency in Labuan Bajo 2025 and Best Boat Rental from Tempo, with 4.8 stars from 152 Google reviews.
What is the “cruise” class, and how does it differ from a phinisi?
Our fleet is organised into four classes: phinisi, yacht, cruise and speedboat. The cruise class describes larger, wider vessels built around interior volume rather than open teak deck space. Where a traditional phinisi is a wooden sailing boat with most of its living space outdoors, a cruise vessel carries a proper enclosed, climate-controlled saloon for dining, more cabins per deck, and usually a rooftop sun deck stacked above.
The practical consequence is comfort spread across ability levels. A cruise vessel gives grandparents an air-conditioned room to retreat to at 11:00 when the sun is punishing, gives teenagers a rooftop to sprawl on, and gives everyone a table indoors when a squall passes through. Wider beam also means less roll at anchor — the difference between a grandmother sleeping and a grandmother lying awake in the Flores Sea.
Which cruise vessels does Komodo Luxury operate?
- Ayvara Cruises — 36 metres, 15 to 16 guests. Komodo Luxury’s featured private vessel: full indoor dining saloon, multiple deck levels, generous cabin count for family groups travelling together.
- Malca Voyages — 30 metres of teak, up to 21 guests. The larger-group option when a single family or corporate party needs to stay on one hull rather than splitting across two boats.
If your group is smaller and prefers open-air sailing character over indoor volume, look instead at Neptune Cruise Phinisi, Naturalia, Vinca Voyages, Celestia or The Maj Oceanic on our phinisi fleet page. For flagship VVIP charter, Komodo Signature (78.2 m, a world-record wooden phinisi superyacht with 10 balcony suites) and Lamima (65.2 m, the largest phinisi-hulled yacht in the world) sit at the top of the range.
How much does a private Komodo cruise charter cost?
Private whole-boat charters are priced per night for the entire vessel, not per person. Cruise-class vessels run USD 5,300 to 13,500 per night depending on size, cabin count and season. Minimum charter is 3 nights (4D3N); maximum is 11 nights (12D11N).
| Vessel class | Guests | Price per night (whole boat) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise (Ayvara, Malca) | 14–25 | USD 5,300 – 13,500 | Multi-generation families, mixed-ability groups, corporate retreats |
| Phinisi | up to 20 | USD 5,300 – 8,500 | Couples and groups wanting open-deck sailing character |
| Yacht (Lamima, Prana by Atzaro) | up to 14 | USD 10,000 – 35,000+ | VVIP charter, highest crew-to-guest service ratio |
| Speedboat (private day charter) | varies | USD 600 – 2,000 per day | Single-day trips, no overnight |
Booking terms are straightforward: a 50% deposit secures the date, and the balance is due 14 days before departure. Charter rates cover the vessel, crew, all meals aboard, cabin accommodation, snorkelling equipment and the tender used for island landings. Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fees are set by the park authority and paid separately — see below. Full pricing across every trip type is on our Komodo boat tour prices page.
Is a private cruise charter better value than booking cabins on a shared trip?
It depends on group size. A shared 3D2N boat tour (locally called an open trip) is priced per cabin and runs USD 330 to 850 per person depending on cabin tier — Yumana Superior at USD 330, Elbark Banda Neira at USD 400, Neptune Mansard at USD 850. For two or four travellers, sharing is far cheaper.
The maths flips at around 12 to 14 guests. At USD 5,300 per night for a 3-night charter — USD 15,900 total — a group of 16 pays roughly USD 994 each for four days with the entire vessel, its crew and its schedule to themselves. Compare that with our sharing vs private breakdown before deciding.
What does a 4D3N private cruise itinerary look like?
Itineraries are yours to shape — that is the point of a charter — but this is the pattern most groups settle on, and it is the one our captains recommend for balancing dragon time, viewpoints and water.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Board at Labuan Bajo harbour, safety briefing, depart | Kelor Island viewpoint climb; snorkelling at Kanawa | Kalong Island — thousands of flying foxes lift off at sunset; anchor overnight |
| Day 2 | Padar Island at sunrise for the three-bay viewpoint; then Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) | Komodo Island (Loh Liang) — ranger-guided dragon trek | Dinner in the indoor saloon; anchor at Gili Lawa |
| Day 3 | Manta Point (Karang Makassar) manta snorkelling; Taka Makassar sandbar | Rinca Island (Loh Buaya) — the wilder ranger station, strongest dragon-sighting odds | Sunset from the rooftop deck; anchor near Sebayur |
| Day 4 | Snorkel at Siaba or Mawan; breakfast underway | Return to Labuan Bajo, disembark late morning | — |
Manjarite and Tatawa are common substitutions when currents or weather make a scheduled site unsuitable. Your captain will say so and offer an alternative rather than push through — this is normal, and it is the correct call.
How many days do you need for a Komodo tour?
Three days and two nights is the recommended minimum for a proper Komodo boat tour, and private charter starts at 4D3N. Padar Island at sunrise and Kalong Island at sunset are both overnight-only experiences — a day trip cannot reach either at the right hour. If your schedule genuinely allows only one day, take the one-day speedboat tour instead: USD 91 per person shared, or USD 800 for a private boat, departing Labuan Bajo around 05:00–06:00 and returning 17:00–18:00.
Safety: what you must know before trekking
Komodo dragons are wild, dangerous animals. You must always stay with your assigned park ranger during any trek and follow their instructions without exception. Do not walk ahead of the group, do not separate to photograph an animal, and keep the distance the ranger sets. Tell your ranger before the trek if anyone in your party has an open wound — dragons detect blood at considerable distance, and rangers will adjust the route.
Treks at both Loh Buaya on Rinca and Loh Liang on Komodo Island run on flat to gently rolling terrain and take 45 to 90 minutes depending on the loop chosen. Guests with limited mobility can take the shortest loop; the ranger will accommodate this if you ask at the station. Komodo National Park fees
As of January 2026, Komodo National Park fees for foreign passport holders are IDR 250,000 (about USD 16) per person per calendar day, set by Government Regulation PP No. 36/2024 — multi-day trips are charged per day in the park, not as a flat trip rate. Fees are set by the park authority and paid separately from tour prices. Indonesian citizens and KITAS holders pay lower rates. Longer charters are assessed on the same duration-tiered basis; we calculate the exact total for your group and dates at booking. Current details are on our park fees and tickets page.
When should you charter?
The dry season from April to November is best for Komodo sailing, with July to September the peak. Seas are calmest and visibility strongest in this window. Labuan Bajo (LBJ) is the gateway — roughly one hour by air from Bali, and we recommend arriving the day before departure rather than connecting on the morning itself. See best time to see Komodo dragons for month-by-month detail, and Komodo boat tour from Bali for the connection logistics.
Do I need to dive on a cruise charter?
No. Our cruise charters are leisure sailing: sightseeing, island hopping, snorkelling, sunsets and ranger-guided dragon trekking. No certification is required and nobody is expected to get in the water at all. Komodo liveaboards are a separate product — vessels configured for scuba with dive decks, compressors and divemasters, repositioning overnight between dive sites for certified divers. If that is what you want, our sister site komododivingtour.com handles diving products and courses.

Frequently asked questions
How many guests can a private Komodo cruise vessel take?
Cruise-class vessels carry 14 to 25 guests. Ayvara Cruises (36 m) takes 15 to 16 guests, and Malca Voyages (30 m teak) takes up to 21. Because you charter the whole boat, the price is the same whether you fill every cabin or not — which is why groups near the upper limit get the best per-person value.
What is the minimum charter length for a private cruise?
Three nights (4D3N) is the minimum, and 11 nights (12D11N) is the maximum. The 3-night minimum exists because a shorter charter cannot reach Padar at sunrise, Kalong at sunset and both ranger stations without rushing every stop.
Is a cruise vessel more stable than a phinisi in rough water?
Generally yes. Cruise vessels have a wider beam and greater displacement, which reduces roll at anchor and in swell. Combined with enclosed indoor dining, that makes the class the better choice for anyone prone to seasickness or travelling with elderly parents and young children.
Are meals and drinks included in the charter price?
All meals prepared aboard by the vessel’s crew are included, along with drinking water, tea and coffee. Alcohol and specialty beverages are quoted separately or may be brought aboard — confirm the arrangement for your specific vessel when you book, as it varies by boat.
How do I pay, and when?
A 50% deposit secures your dates. The remaining balance is due 14 days before departure. Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fees are separate from the charter price and are set by the park authority.
Can we customise the itinerary?
Yes — that is the core advantage of private charter. You set wake-up times, choose which islands to prioritise, add or skip snorkel stops, and decide how long to linger anywhere. The only constraints are park regulations, ranger station operating hours and the captain’s judgement on weather and currents.
