The best time to visit Komodo National Park is the dry season from April to November, when seas are calmest and sailing days are most reliable, with July to September the busiest peak. Trips depart from Labuan Bajo on Flores, either as a full-day speedboat tour or an overnight sailing trip aboard a phinisi.
Updated January 2026. This page covers trip and sea seasonality — swell, rainfall, underwater visibility, crowd pressure and manta likelihood month by month — so you can pick departure dates that suit the trip you actually want. If your question is specifically about when the lizards are most active and easiest to photograph, read best time to see Komodo dragons instead. Komodo dragons are present at Rinca Island (Loh Buaya) and Komodo Island (Loh Liang) every day of the year; the sea is what changes.
The short version
- Best overall: May, June and September — calm water, good visibility, fewer boats than peak.
- Peak season: July to September — best weather reliability, highest demand, cabins and private charters sell out months ahead.
- Quietest good weather: April and October — shoulder months with softening crowds.
- Most challenging: January and February — the height of the northwest monsoon, when crossings to Padar Island and Komodo Island are most often affected by wind and swell.
- Recommended trip length: 3D2N is the sensible minimum for a proper Komodo boat tour. A day trip works if you are short on time.
Month-by-month sea and trip conditions
The table below is written for planning a sailing trip, not for a weather forecast. “Sea state” describes the crossings that matter most — the open water between Labuan Bajo, Padar Island, Komodo Island and Manta Point (Karang Makassar). Conditions in any single week can differ; our crews make the final call on routing each morning.
| Month | Sea state | Rainfall | Underwater visibility | Crowds | Manta likelihood |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Roughest — northwest monsoon swell | Highest | Reduced, often patchy | Very low | Moderate |
| February | Rough, frequent windy days | High | Reduced | Very low | Moderate |
| March | Settling, mixed | Easing | Improving | Low | Moderate to good |
| April | Calm on most days | Low | Good | Low to moderate | Good |
| May | Calm | Low | Good to excellent | Moderate | Good |
| June | Calm, light southeast breeze | Very low | Excellent | Moderate to high | Very good |
| July | Calm with breezy afternoons | Very low | Excellent | Peak | Very good |
| August | Calm with breezy afternoons | Very low | Excellent | Peak | Very good |
| September | Calm | Very low | Excellent | High, easing late month | Very good |
| October | Calm, occasional swell late month | Low, rising late | Good | Moderate | Good |
| November | Mixed, transition to wet season | Rising | Variable | Low to moderate | Good |
| December | Increasingly rough | High | Reduced | Brief holiday spike | Moderate |
Why does sea state matter more than rain?
Rain in Flores usually arrives in short, heavy bursts and passes. Swell decides whether the boat can comfortably reach the places you came for. The crossings toward Padar Island, the run out to Manta Point (Karang Makassar) and the anchorage rotation around Gili Lawa and Sebayur are all exposed. On a rough January morning a crew may re-route toward the more sheltered inner islands — Kelor, Kanawa, Siaba, Mawan, Manjarite — which is a good day out but not the postcard itinerary most travellers picture. From April to November, the classic route runs as intended far more often.
When is underwater visibility best for snorkelling?
June through September is the strongest window. Plankton-rich water and stronger currents earlier and later in the year can cut clarity at sites such as Taka Makassar and Tatawa, while the same nutrient load is exactly what draws mantas in to feed. That trade-off is real: the clearest water and the densest manta aggregations do not always fall in the same week. If snorkelling clarity is your priority, aim for June to September. For serious scuba diving, dive-specific liveaboards and courses are covered by our sister site komododivingtour.com — we run sailing and sightseeing trips, not dive schools.
How many days do you need for a Komodo tour?
Three days and two nights is the recommended minimum. Padar Island at sunrise, the flying foxes leaving Kalong Island at sunset, and a genuinely unhurried ranger-guided trek all depend on sleeping aboard. A one-day speedboat tour compresses the park into a single long push from about 05:00 to 18:00 and skips both the sunrise and the sunset entirely.
| Trip | What the season changes | Best months |
|---|---|---|
| 1-Day Speedboat Tour | Most weather-sensitive — a single rough morning can reshape the whole route | May to October |
| 2D1N Overnight Trip | One night aboard gives the crew a second weather window to work with | April to November |
| 3D2N Shared Liveaboard (Phinisi) | Enough time to catch Padar sunrise and Kalong sunset even if one day is windy | April to November |
| 4D3N Private Charter | Most resilient — the itinerary can be rebuilt around conditions daily | Year-round, best April to November |

For peak-season sailing in July, August and September, book several months ahead — the better cabins on vessels such as Neptune Cruise Phinisi, Ayvara Cruises and Malca Voyages go first. Our full fleet of phinisi vessels is owned, crewed and maintained in-house.
Park fees are separate, and they change with trip length
As of January 2026, Komodo National Park fees for foreign passport holders are IDR 250,000 (about USD 16) per person per calendar day, set by Government Regulation PP No. 36/2024 — multi-day trips are charged per day in the park, not as a flat trip rate. Fees are set by the park authority and paid separately from tour prices. Full detail is on our park fees and tickets page.
Safety on the trekking days
Komodo dragons are wild, dangerous animals. You must always stay with your assigned park ranger during any trek and follow their instructions. Do not walk ahead, do not separate from the group to take photographs, and tell your ranger before the walk if you have an open wound. Trekking runs on the same rules in every month of the year — see Komodo dragon trekking and Rinca vs Komodo Island for which ranger station suits your group.
Choosing your month, honestly
If you can travel any time, go in June or September: the sea behaves, the water is clear, and you avoid the worst of the August crush at Padar Island’s viewpoint. If your dates are fixed in the wet season, take a longer trip rather than a day trip — a 3D2N or 4D3N sailing gives the crew room to work around weather instead of racing it. And if you want the park close to empty, February rewards flexibility: fewer boats at Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), fewer people on the ridge, and the acceptance that one or two crossings may be re-routed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Komodo National Park open all year?
Yes. The park operates year-round and dragons are present at Rinca Island (Loh Buaya) and Komodo Island (Loh Liang) in every month. What varies is sea state, which affects whether the standard sailing route runs as planned.
What is the worst month to visit Komodo?
January and February sit at the height of the northwest monsoon, with the roughest crossings, the heaviest rain and the most reduced underwater visibility. Trips still run, but re-routing toward sheltered islands is more common.
When are mantas most likely at Manta Point?
Manta rays are seen at Manta Point (Karang Makassar) throughout the year, with the strongest odds broadly from April to October. Sightings depend on tide and current on the day and are never guaranteed.
Should I avoid July and August because of crowds?
Not necessarily — the weather is at its most reliable. If crowds concern you, book a private charter so your boat can reach Padar Island’s viewpoint ahead of the shared fleet, or choose late September instead.
How far ahead should I book for peak season?
For July to September, several months ahead. A 50% deposit secures the date and the balance is due 14 days before departure.
How do I get to Labuan Bajo?
Labuan Bajo (LBJ) on Flores is the gateway and is roughly a one-hour flight from Bali. See Komodo boat tour from Bali for connection planning.
