How to Get to Komodo National Park — Flights, Ferries and Transfers to Labuan Bajo

Komodo National Park is reached by boat from Labuan Bajo, the harbour town on the western tip of Flores, Indonesia. Most travellers fly into Komodo Airport (LBJ) from Denpasar, Bali, in about 1 to 1.5 hours, then join a sailing tour departing from Labuan Bajo harbour. There is no airport inside the park.

Updated January 2026

This is the logistics page we wish more travellers read before booking. Komodo National Park has no runway, no road access and no scheduled public transport to its islands. Every visit — a full day trip or a multi-night cruise — starts at the same place: the harbour at Labuan Bajo. Get your flight timing right and the trip is effortless. Get it wrong and you lose a day, or worse, miss a departure that leaves at first light.

Komodo Dragon Tour is operated by Komodo Luxury, a Labuan Bajo sailing operator working in the park since 2015. We own, crew and maintain our own fleet, and we co-ordinate airport-to-harbour timing for guests every single morning. Everything below is how it actually works on the ground.

Where exactly are you going?

Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Flores Sea, made up of Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Padar Island and dozens of smaller islands and reefs — Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), Manta Point (Karang Makassar), Taka Makassar, Kanawa, Kelor, Kalong Island, Gili Lawa, Siaba, Sebayur, Mawan, Manjarite and Tatawa among them. Komodo dragons are seen at two ranger stations: Loh Buaya on Rinca Island and Loh Liang on Komodo Island.

The gateway to all of it is Labuan Bajo, on Flores. Labuan Bajo is a town, not an island in the park — you sleep there the night before, and you board there in the morning.

How do you get to Komodo Island?

You fly to Komodo Airport (airport code LBJ) in Labuan Bajo, then travel by boat. There is no ferry service, bridge or road to Komodo Island itself. Access to the island is by chartered or shared vessel only, and every visitor must be accompanied by a licensed park ranger once ashore.

Flying to Komodo Airport (LBJ)

Komodo Airport is a small domestic airport roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from the harbour and the main hotel strip. It handles domestic Indonesian flights; international arrivals clear immigration in Bali or Jakarta first.

RouteTypical flight timeNotes
Denpasar, Bali (DPS) → Labuan Bajo (LBJ)About 1–1.5 hoursThe standard route. Multiple daily departures, mostly morning and midday.
Jakarta (CGK) → Labuan Bajo (LBJ)About 2.5–3.5 hoursDaily service; fewer options than Bali, so book earlier.
Any international arrivalVia DPS or CGKClear immigration at the international gateway, then connect on a domestic flight.

Two practical points. First, baggage allowance on domestic Indonesian carriers is tighter than on long-haul flights — check it before you pack, and expect a fee for excess. Second, the last flights of the day out of Labuan Bajo are early by international standards; plan your return around afternoon departures, not evening ones.

Should you fly in the day before your tour?

Yes. This is the single most important piece of advice on this page. A full-day speedboat tour departs Labuan Bajo harbour at roughly 05:00–06:00 and returns around 17:00–18:00. Multi-night sailing departures leave in the morning. No morning flight from Bali arrives in time.

Fly into Labuan Bajo the day before, sleep in town, and board rested. Weather and small-aircraft schedules in eastern Indonesia move around; one buffer night removes almost all of that risk. On the return side, leave at least one night in Labuan Bajo after a multi-night cruise before an international flight home — a delayed disembarkation should never threaten a long-haul connection.

Getting from Komodo Airport to the harbour

The transfer is short and simple. Options, in the order most guests use them:

On departure morning, the walk or drive from a central Labuan Bajo hotel to the harbour is a matter of minutes. We send a WhatsApp confirmation the evening before with your pickup time and the pier your vessel is berthed at.

Ferry and overland routes to Labuan Bajo

Flying is how the overwhelming majority of visitors arrive, but Labuan Bajo is also a working port with sea connections. These routes suit travellers with time who want the overland journey to be part of the trip — not travellers on a schedule.

Sea and road schedules in this region change with weather, season and operator. Confirm departures locally within a few days of travel, and never book a boat tour on the assumption that a ferry will arrive on time.

Can you get to Komodo National Park directly from Bali?

Not on the same day, and not by any scheduled service. Bali is roughly a one-hour flight away, and the park lies a further boat journey beyond Labuan Bajo. Trips sold as “Komodo from Bali” are Bali-inclusive packages built around a flight to Labuan Bajo — the sailing itself still starts and finishes at the harbour. See our Komodo boat tour from Bali page for how those packages are put together.

What it costs once you arrive

Your flights and hotel are separate from two other costs: the tour itself and the park entrance fee.

TripPriceTiming from Labuan Bajo
1-Day Shared Speedboat TourUSD 91 per person (IDR 1,450,000)Departs ~05:00–06:00, returns ~17:00–18:00
1-Day Private Speedboat CharterUSD 800 per boatSame-day, flexible departure
2D1N CruiseFrom about USD 250–450 per personOne night aboard
3D2N Shared Liveaboard (Phinisi)USD 330–850 per person, priced per cabin tierTwo nights aboard — our recommended minimum
Private Whole-Boat CharterFrom USD 5,300 per nightMinimum 3 nights, maximum 11 nights

Park fees are separate and set by the park authority. As of January 2026, Komodo National Park fees for foreign passport holders are IDR 250,000 (about USD 16) per person per calendar day, set by Government Regulation PP No. 36/2024 — multi-day trips are charged per day in the park, not as a flat trip rate. Bring your passport — fees are tiered by visitor class and duration, and rangers check documents.

Booking works the same way whichever trip you choose: a 50% deposit secures the date, with the balance due 14 days before departure. Full price detail is on our Komodo boat tour prices page.

How many days do you need in Labuan Bajo?

For a day trip: three nights total is comfortable — arrive, sail, fly out. For a 3D2N cruise: five nights covers the arrival buffer, two nights aboard and a relaxed departure day. We recommend 3D2N as the minimum for a proper Komodo boat tour, because Padar Island at sunrise and the flying foxes at Kalong Island at sunset simply cannot be reached inside a single day’s sailing.

When to come

The dry season, April to November, is the best time to sail, with July to September the peak. Seas are calmer, visibility is better and flight schedules are at their fullest. In the wet season, crossings can be rougher and flights more prone to weather delay — another argument for that buffer night. More detail on seasonality and dragon behaviour is on our best time to see Komodo dragons page.

A safety note before you board

Komodo dragons are wild, dangerous animals. You must always stay with your assigned park ranger during any trek and follow their instructions. Do not walk ahead, do not separate from your group, and do not attempt to photograph a dragon at close range. Rangers know the individual animals on their patch; their instructions are not a formality.

Do I need to fly to Labuan Bajo the day before my tour?

Yes, we strongly recommend it. Day trips depart the harbour at around 05:00–06:00 and multi-night cruises board in the morning. No same-day flight from Bali or Jakarta arrives early enough, and one buffer night protects you against weather-related delays on small domestic aircraft.

How long is the flight from Bali to Komodo Airport?

About 1 to 1.5 hours from Denpasar (DPS) to Komodo Airport, Labuan Bajo (LBJ), with multiple daily departures. From Jakarta (CGK) the flight is roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours, with fewer daily options, so book further ahead.

Is there a ferry to Komodo Island?

No. There is no scheduled ferry to Komodo Island or Rinca Island. Ferries serve Labuan Bajo itself — the national Pelni passenger line and the Sape (Sumbawa) crossing — but travel into Komodo National Park is by chartered or shared tour vessel only.

How far is Komodo Airport from the harbour?

About 10 to 15 minutes by road. Taxis and ride-hailing are available on arrival, most hotels offer pickup, and we arrange transfers for guests on multi-night trips so boarding time is never in doubt.

How much are the Komodo National Park entrance fees?

As of January 2026, Komodo National Park fees for foreign passport holders are IDR 250,000 (about USD 16) per person per calendar day, set by Government Regulation PP No. 36/2024 — multi-day trips are charged per day in the park, not as a flat trip rate. Fees are set by the park authority and paid separately from your tour price. Bring your passport.

Can I visit Komodo National Park as a day trip from Bali?

Not realistically. Bali is a separate island roughly an hour’s flight away, and the park is a further boat journey beyond Labuan Bajo. Packages advertised as day trips from Bali include the flight and an overnight stay; the sailing itself always begins and ends at Labuan Bajo harbour.
