Komodo Boat Tour from Bali: Flight-Inclusive Dragon Cruises

A Komodo boat tour from Bali means a short 1-hour flight to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), then a ranger-led liveaboard cruise to walk with wild Komodo dragons on Rinca and Komodo Islands. Komodo Luxury runs 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N dragon cruises from USD 247 per person, departing Labuan Bajo daily. Bali is your gateway, not your dock.

Why every Komodo boat tour starts with a flight from Bali

Here is the single most important logistics fact confused travellers miss: you cannot sail a boat straight from Bali to the Komodo dragons. The Komodo National Park is roughly 400 kilometres east of Bali, and the gateway town is Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. The practical, comfortable and near-universal route is a 1-hour domestic flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) to Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ), where your Komodo Luxury boat and crew are already waiting at the harbour.

Multi-day sailing voyages directly from Bali do exist, but they take 3 to 4 days each way at sea, add significant cost, and spend most of that time crossing open water rather than actually seeing dragons. For the vast majority of guests who want to see the Komodo dragons with a park ranger, fly to Labuan Bajo and sail from there. That is exactly how Komodo Luxury has operated since 2015, and it is why we frame every trip around the dragons rather than the sailing distance.

Flight-inclusive vs boat-only: what Komodo Luxury actually books

When you book a Komodo boat tour from Bali with us, the sea portion — boat, cabin, crew, meals, snorkelling gear, ranger fees coordination and the full dragon itinerary — is what we own and operate. The Bali-to-Labuan Bajo flight is a short, inexpensive domestic hop (typically USD 45-90 each way depending on season and how early you book) on carriers like Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink or Wings Air. We help you time your flights precisely around your departure, and many guests simply add the flight to their package so everything lines up in one plan.

Because we own, crew and maintain our own fleet, there are no broker fees layered on top — the price you see is the boat you board. Competitors hide their rates and re-sell other operators’ cabins; we publish ours in USD and IDR so you can compare like-for-like before you fly.

The three flight-inclusive itineraries from Bali

Pick the trip length that matches how many days you have on the ground after your Bali flight. All three are built around the dragons first, with snorkelling, islands and viewpoints layered in.

2D1N — the fast dragon escape

Fly from Bali in the morning, sail the same afternoon, sleep one night aboard, and cover the core highlights. A 2D1N shared liveaboard hits Padar Island’s three-bay sunrise viewpoint, Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), Komodo or Rinca Island for the dragon trek with a ranger, and Manta Point for snorkelling with giant mantas. Ideal if you only have a two-day window carved out of a longer Bali holiday.

3D2N — the most popular open-trip cruise

The 3D2N open/share Phinisi trip is our best-seller for a reason: two nights aboard gives you both ranger stations, more snorkel stops (Taka Makassar sandbar, Kanawa Island reef, Siaba turtle point), Kalong Island’s flying-fox sunset, and a relaxed pace. This is the sweet spot for first-time visitors flying in from Bali who want to see the dragons properly without rushing.

4D3N — the complete Komodo expedition

Three nights lets the boat range wider — Gili Lawa’s ridge hike, deeper reef sites, both Loh Buaya (Rinca) and Loh Liang (Komodo) dragon treks, and unhurried mornings. Best for photographers, divers-at-heart and families who fly from Bali specifically for Komodo and want the fullest version.

Transparent per-person and per-group pricing (USD + IDR)

These are the sea-portion prices from Labuan Bajo, before your Bali flight and before the separately-paid park fee. Booking is a 50% deposit with the balance due 14 days before departure (H-14).

Not included and paid separately: the Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fee, set by the park authority at roughly IDR 250,000 per person per day (~USD 40). This goes to conservation and the rangers who keep you safe on the dragon trek — no operator can waive it. Your Bali-to-Labuan Bajo flight (USD 45-90 each way) is also separate unless you ask us to bundle it.

Sample flight-inclusive timing for a 3D2N trip

Here is how a typical departure lines up so you can plan flights with confidence:

WhenWhat happens
Day 1, ~08:00Fly Bali (DPS) → Labuan Bajo (LBJ), 1 hour
Day 1, ~10:00Airport pickup, transfer to harbour, board your Phinisi
Day 1, afternoonSail out — Kelor Island hike, Kalong sunset, overnight aboard
Day 2Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, Komodo Island dragon trek, Manta Point, Taka Makassar
Day 3, morningRinca (Loh Buaya) dragon trek, Kanawa snorkel, return to LBJ ~12:00
Day 3, afternoonFly LBJ → Bali (book flights after 15:00 to be safe)

Golden rule: never book your return Bali flight before mid-afternoon on your final day — sea conditions and boat speed vary, and you want a buffer. Our team confirms exact times when you book.

When to fly: best season for a Komodo boat tour from Bali

The dry season, April to November, offers the calmest seas and clearest water. July to September is peak — book early, as popular cabins on our open-trip fleet sell out. Manta rays are seen year-round at Manta Point, and the dragons are active every day of the year regardless of season, since they are wild residents of Rinca and Komodo Islands. If you want fewer crowds with still-good conditions, aim for April-May or October-November.

Which boat will you be on?

Unlike brokers who won’t name a vessel, we tell you exactly what you’re boarding. Open-trip and shared cabins run on our VIP liveaboards — Catnazse, Ayvara Cruises, Malca Voyages, Elbark Cruises, Naturalia, plus Neptune, Yumana, Vinca and Mosalaki. Private charters step up to VVIP Phinisi like Lamima, Prana, Velocean, Celestia and The Maj Oceanic, all the way to our owned superyachts Komodo Signature (78.2m world-record wooden Phinisi) and Komodo Prestige (66m). Day-trippers use our sharing and private speedboat fleet. See the full lineup on our fleet and Phinisi vessels page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a boat directly from Bali to see the Komodo dragons?

Not practically. The dragons live 400km east of Bali in Komodo National Park, accessed via Labuan Bajo. Direct sailing voyages take 3-4 days each way. The standard route is a 1-hour flight from Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), then a Komodo Luxury cruise from there. Bali is your gateway, not your dock.

How much is the flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo?

Domestic flights run roughly USD 45-90 each way, depending on season and how early you book, on carriers like Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink and Wings Air. The flight is only about 1 hour. We can help time or bundle it with your boat tour package.

What is the total cost including flights and park fees?

As an example, a 3D2N shared cabin from USD 330pp + roughly USD 40 park/ranger fee + about USD 90-180 round-trip flight from Bali lands near USD 350-440 per person all-in. Private charters and superyachts scale up from there. All boat prices are published in USD and IDR upfront.

How many days do I need for a Komodo boat tour from Bali?

Budget a minimum of 3 days: one to fly in and start sailing, and enough time for the dragon treks at Rinca and Komodo plus snorkelling. The 3D2N open trip is the most popular. If tight on time, a 2D1N works; for the fullest experience choose 4D3N.

Are the Komodo dragons guaranteed and is it safe?

Dragons are wild residents of Rinca (Loh Buaya) and Komodo (Loh Liang), and sightings on the ranger-led treks are extremely reliable year-round. Every trek is accompanied by an experienced park ranger who keeps a safe distance and guides the group. The park fee funds these rangers.

When is the best time to fly from Bali for this trip?

April to November (dry season) has the calmest seas and clearest water; July-September is peak, so book early. Mantas are seen year-round and the dragons are active every day. April-May and October-November offer great conditions with fewer crowds.
