A Kanawa Island boat tour from Labuan Bajo is a reef-snorkeling stop run by Komodo Dragon Tour (operated by Komodo Luxury since 2015), reached in about 60-90 minutes by boat. It pairs Kanawa’s clear house reef with a ranger-led Komodo dragon visit, from USD 105 per person on a shared speedboat day trip.
Kanawa Island sits just west of Labuan Bajo (LBJ) at the gateway of Komodo National Park, and its shallow house reef is one of the easiest, most beginner-friendly snorkel spots in the whole archipelago. At Komodo Dragon Tour we always frame Kanawa the way it deserves: not as a stand-alone “island-hopping” outing, but as the calm-water reward on a proper Komodo dragon expedition. Every trip we run is, first and foremost, a way to see the Komodo dragons with a licensed park ranger — Kanawa is the snorkeling jewel we thread into that itinerary. We are owner-operated (we own, crew and maintain our own boats — no broker fees), 4x TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice winners (2022-2025), and named “Best Boat Agency in Labuan Bajo” by TripAdvisor in 2025.
What to expect on a Kanawa Island boat tour
Kanawa’s reef begins just a few metres off the jetty, in water so clear you can watch the coral shelf drop away beneath you. Expect gentle current, warm 27-29°C water year-round, and a genuinely dense reef community: parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sand, and — if you are patient near the deeper edge — green sea turtles gliding through. Because the reef is shallow and sheltered, it is ideal for first-time snorkelers, children, and anyone who wants a low-pressure introduction to Komodo’s underwater world before tackling the stronger currents at Manta Point or Taka Makassar.
On a typical day, your boat anchors off Kanawa in the late morning or midday window between dragon-trekking and the afternoon photo islands. You will have roughly 45-90 minutes to snorkel the house reef, relax on the white-sand beach, or hike the short hill behind the beach for a view back across the strait toward Labuan Bajo. Mask, snorkel, fins and life jackets are provided on every Komodo Dragon Tour vessel, and our crew stays in the water or on the tender to keep newer swimmers comfortable.
Which Komodo boat trips include Kanawa Island
Kanawa is close to Labuan Bajo, so it appears on both fast day trips and longer liveaboards. The right choice depends on how much park you want to see and whether you want to sleep aboard among the islands.
- One-day sharing speedboat: the quickest way to combine Kanawa with a Rinca Island dragon trek and a second snorkel stop — ideal if you are short on time.
- 3D2N open-share Phinisi trip: the classic Komodo route weaves Kanawa in alongside Padar, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Komodo/Rinca dragon treks, sleeping aboard a traditional wooden Phinisi.
- Private charter: full flexibility to spend as long as you like on Kanawa’s reef and set your own pace across the park.

Kanawa alongside the dragons and the other stops
What makes a Kanawa snorkel truly worthwhile is the company it keeps on a Komodo itinerary. Most trips that visit Kanawa also land at Rinca Island (Loh Buaya ranger station) — the wilder island with the best dragon-spotting odds — or Komodo Island (Loh Liang), where you trek with an armed ranger to see the world’s largest living lizard in its natural habitat. From there the classic route continues to Padar Island’s three-bay sunrise viewpoint, the rose-tinted sand of Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), and the manta-cleaning station at Manta Point (Karang Makassar).
Kanawa’s calm reef is the perfect counterweight to those bigger-current sites. If you loved snorkeling here, you will also want the disappearing sandbar at Taka Makassar and the manta encounters at Manta Point. For the hike-and-view crowd, pair it with Padar Island and Kelor Island. And of course, the whole point remains the dragons — read how the Komodo dragon boat tour works and where to see them on Rinca vs Komodo Island.
Best time to visit Kanawa Island
The dry season from April to November delivers the calmest seas and clearest visibility, with July to September the peak window — book early for those months. Manta rays are around year-round, so even a wet-season Kanawa trip pairs well with a Manta Point stop. Visibility on the house reef is generally excellent in the dry months, occasionally softened by plankton blooms that, ironically, bring the mantas closer. For the dragons themselves, cooler morning treks in the dry season are most comfortable; see the best time to see Komodo dragons for month-by-month detail.
Our fleet for Kanawa Island tours

What to bring and how the day works
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a quick-dry towel, a change of clothes, and a dry bag for your phone. We supply snorkeling gear, life jackets, drinking water, fresh fruit and meals per your itinerary. Day trips depart Labuan Bajo harbour early — around 06:00 — and return by evening; overnight trips settle into an unhurried rhythm of dragon treks at dawn, snorkel stops like Kanawa through the day, and sunset viewpoints. Labuan Bajo is roughly a one-hour flight from Bali, so many guests fly in the day before. For those routing from Bali, see our Komodo boat tour from Bali guide.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kanawa Island good for beginner snorkelers?
Yes. Kanawa’s house reef starts just off the jetty in shallow, sheltered water with gentle current, making it one of the most beginner-friendly snorkel spots near Labuan Bajo. Our crew provides life jackets and stays close to newer swimmers.
How long does it take to reach Kanawa Island from Labuan Bajo?
Roughly 60-90 minutes by boat, depending on your vessel. On our sharing speedboat day trip it is one of the first stops; on a 3D2N Phinisi trip it is woven in between dragon treks and the afternoon photo islands.
Can I see Komodo dragons on the same trip as Kanawa?
Absolutely — every Komodo Dragon Tour that visits Kanawa is built around a ranger-led dragon trek at Rinca (Loh Buaya) or Komodo Island (Loh Liang). Kanawa is the snorkeling stop, not the whole trip.
How much does a Kanawa Island boat tour cost?
From USD 105-130 per person on a shared speedboat day trip, or from USD 330 per person on a 3D2N open-share Phinisi trip. The Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fee (~USD 40) is paid separately to the park authority.
Are turtles and mantas found near Kanawa?
Green sea turtles are regularly seen along the deeper edge of Kanawa’s reef. Manta rays are best encountered at nearby Manta Point (Karang Makassar), which most Kanawa itineraries also include, and they are present year-round.
Is snorkeling equipment included?
Yes. Mask, snorkel, fins and life jackets are provided free on every Komodo Dragon Tour vessel. Just bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a towel and a dry bag for your valuables.
